Soongies' Great Adventure
It was new territory to explore for the Australians today. We headed east to York, about 2 hour drive from Heswall. Richard's car seats 5 people and of course a dog. Barnaby was a little bit confused about this car ride as he usually gets a seat (preferably the front but, at the very least, a spot in the back) but today he was mostly on the floor. We arrived in York and stopped at the Gulp & Graze cafe for brunch before we headed out to explore the city. We saw the York Minster (lined up to go in but then decided we didn't need to pay £10 each to view the church), the Treasurer's House, The Shambles, the Castle, and the Roman Column. We also popped in to the famous Betty's Tearooms to grab some custard tarts and scones for tonight's dessert! While walking along the river, Richard almost got cycled over by a man on a road bike as he was crossing the cycle path. We also spotted some geese and goslings who weren't such a fan of Barnaby. We stopped at the York Castle Museum for a cup of tea and then walked the walls back to the other side of town for dinner at The Lion and Lamb pub. During the walk on the walls, Fiona, who was walking Barnaby, was looking back and talking to us when, all of sudden, she glanced forward, realised in an instant that she was about to fall down some stone steps, did a terrific jump and launched herself up and out over the stairs ending with a perfect landing on both feet and arms up - just like a professional gymnast. The look on Fiona's face was of pure disbelief and relief that she didn't crash land. She was very chuffed with her reflexes. At The Lion and Lamb pub, danger seemed to follow the Davies family as a gust of wind blew through the courtyard, lifted a heavy table umbrella up (just like Mary Poppins) and toppled it right in front of Richard! He was glad he got away with that unscathed! We decided it would be warmer (and safer) inside the pub. Dinner was scrumptious and the roast was accompanied by a ginormous Yorkshire pudding with lots of gravy. We headed back to the car and drove home to play Bananagrams!
