Soongies' Great Adventure
Christmas eve in England! After finally making it to Heswall from Budapest, we woke up refreshed in the most comfortable bed and cosiest room in Auntie Fiona and Uncle Ric*********derful house. Weather in Heswall is much warmer than Budapest – it's in the positives! Calvin even went for a run this morning around Heswall! On the agenda for the day was some last minute Christmas gift shopping at the local Tesco before we all headed off in the cars to Liverpool. Liverpool, the waterfront in particular, was extremely windy – wasn’t quite cold but the chill factor brought us in to the Fab4 Beatles Café for a quick bite and hot drink. The hot chocolate came with a whole plate of mini marshmallows which Amy, Andrew and Kate were all too pleased about! Amy also discovered that the Beatles were from Liverpool! From the waterfront, we went to the Liverpool Cathedral for the 3 pm Christmas Carols service. The Liverpool Anglican Cathedral is the largest one in the UK and the 5th largest in the world. The inside is magnificently tall and huge! We arrived just a few minutes before it started so we were fortunate enough to get the few seats in the very back. We couldn’t see much of the real action but it had a live stream on the television in the back so we could follow what was happening. It was a nice service with some hymns and a short but sweet message about the birth of Jesus and his role as our Saviour. We then walked down the road to see the Metropolitan Catholic Cathedral for a look – it’s a unique design, a circular building with curved pews and very interesting / scary sculptures all around. Wandering around the main mall of Liverpool, we went through the Liverpool One shops – the whole place was lit up, there were huge Christmas trees everywhere and a very festive atmosphere around. We stopped into the John Lewis department store for a bit before heading up to the Carpathia Champagne Bar and Restaurant (themed as the Titanic) for a short rest. The views from the restaurant were pretty with the Christmas lights on the waterfront. We returned home for an hour, which gave Kate and Calvin enough time to wrap the presents. Then a short walk to The Jug and Bottle (or as Uncle Richard calls it, the Pig and Whistle) for a Christmas eve dinner. The pub was packed with people but fortunately, Auntie Fiona had booked a table (and checked it thrice) a few weeks ago. Dinner was delicious and very filling!
