Soongies' Great Adventure
Calvin's Aunty and Uncle live only about 40km from the Mexican border so of course we had to visit Mexico!
Betty made us a delicious vegan breakfast comprising French toast with blueberry compote, oatmeal sausages, cherries and longan. It was sooo yummy and filling!
Betty contacted her friend, Santa, who grew up in Mexico and who often goes across the border and she was free today to take us across!
We drove to Calexico (the California / Mexico border town on the US side) where we met Santa. We then all got in her car and she drove us into Mexicali (the Mexico / California border town on the Mexican side). There were no passport checks or anything - we just drove straight through. It was pretty crazy how the scenery and cityscape changed immediately after we crossed the border! And all of a sudden everyone was speaking Spanish.
Santa drove us to a delicious authentic taco restaurant. On the table was all the toppings. We ordered a beef tortilla first and then afterwards got a chicken tortilla. They were so yummy and really cheap! We even had a delicious home made lemonade too.
After our meal Santa drove us through the streets of Mexicali past the old bull ring and also past the oldest mall in Mexicali. It was just really cool taking in the vibe of Mexico.
It was then time to join the queue to get back into California. Whilst in the very slow moving queue there were loads of people trying to sell their goods. Joseph bought a couple of window shades from one of the sellers - the seller was so happy! Finally we got to the front of the queue and handed in our passports...would we be allowed back in?? Yep! No problem at all! Phew!
Santa then drove us back to our car and then it was time to do some errands in preparation for our imminent campervan trip. We investigated some phone SIM options, then went to the 99c store and DDs discount store and stocked up on bits and pieces there. We then went to Costco to get stuff for dinner, although we ended up all having a foot and back massage on one of the promotional massage machines - the young salesman, Orlando, was really friendly and recommended we should go to Puerto Rico, where he comes from. We helped ourselves to some yummy tasters too.
Once we got home, Kate and Calvin walked to the nearby swimming pool with the aim of going for a swim. Unfortunately once we got there we found out the pool was closed today. So we did our own little workout on the grass out the front.
For dinner we had Betty's homemade albondigas (Mexican meatball soup) and kuih (Asian desserts). Yummy!
