Soongies' Great Adventure
Our cute Airbnb apartment is so warm - it almost makes it hard to leave it knowing it's going to be in the negatives outside! Calvin wore double socks today to try and keep his toes from snapping off! Kate thinks she is getting sick as she feels tired, has a sore throat and a bit of a cough. We started off the day by going to the Holocaust Memorial Centre. We spent 2 hours reading and watching films and looking at photos about the terrible history of the Holocaust in Europe and stories specifically from Hungary. It was moving, heartbreaking and terrifying reading about the atrocities against the Jewish people and the Roma of Europe and Hungary. So many shocking and horrific things were done by the Nazis and their allies to disempower, humiliate and, ultimately deport the Jews and Roma to concentration and death camps. It was extremely informative but also very sad. After leaving the memorial centre, we had a Hungarian lunch at Randevú Pizzéria - chicken paprikash for Calvin and garlic soup (good for a cold!) with cheese pizza for Kate. Hearty dishes for a winter day. We walked to the River Danube to the dock for our Hop-On Hop-Off river cruise which started at 3 pm. This 1 hour cruise took us up and down the river to see the magnificent buildings on either side. We passed under the many bridges crossing the river, saw the Citadella, the Castle district, the Parliament House and many other buildings that we can't remember! Once off the boat, we walked along the river to the Shoes on the Danube Bank - a memorial to the Budapest Jews and others who were murdered by the Arrow Cross during WWII. The iron shoes are a reminder of the people who were ordered to take off their shoes before they were shot and were carried away by the River Danube. Just a few metres away, we came to the Parliament House - a grand structure, the third largest Parliament building in the world. It's beautiful - especially seeing it lit up at night. We were so cold by this time but we found a large heat vent nearby with some guards standing on it - they didn't seem to mind us joining them! We also saw 2 soldiers marching in a circle around a flagpole in front of the Parliament - couldn't imagine doing that for a whole shift in the freezing weather! We dropped into the Chocolate Museum nearby for a short while. We didn't bother visiting the museum section - we just bought a Dobos Torte to take away for dessert after dinner! Dobos Torte is a traditional Hungarian cake made of 5 layers of buttercream and sponge with hard caramel on the top. For dinner, we went to Kisharang - a small, cosy and traditional looking restaurant. Calvin had beef stew with nokedli and Kate had crepes filled with meat in paprikash sauce. There wasn't a lot of vegetables so we ordered some pickled cabbage to go with it! At home, we had our Dobos Torte with Christmas music playing. Only 3 days left to Christmas!
