Soongies' Great Adventure
We woke up in a very comfortable bed in a very lovely house to a very crisp morning. It was frosty outside - even the puddles had a layer of ice on top. Uncle David (Joy's husband) had actually arrived at midnight last night and it was great to see him - especially as he had such a busy schedule! He had lit a fire place to warm the house up which Calvin used to warm up his feet. Joy, Kate and Calvin went for a walk around Bournemouth over to West Bournemouth through to the main street where we stopped for breakfast at Le Petit Prince - a warm and cosy cafe with a delicious array of fresh breads and cakes. It was very popular and we were fortunate to get a table. The freshly baked croissant with goats cheese, greens and caramelised red onion hit the spot on a cold morning. We walked over to the post office to send one of Kate's shoes back as they weren't a good fit. Once that was done, Joy led us through the Alum Chine crossing the Bourne on a little bridge (where we played 'pooh sticks' - the name given to a game of dropping a stick in the river from a bridge and seeing whose stick came out the other side first - Joy won that time) and down to the beach! It was nice to see a long stretch of shore and beautiful sandy beaches. It was a clear day so we could see all around the coast from Sandbanks to Hengistbury Head. You could even see the Isle of Wight in the distance. All along the beachfront, there were colourful beach shacks lined up on the pathway. Being winter, they were all shut but it was nice to see them brightly painted. We strolled along the beachside to the pier, walked up and back before heading through to the pretty lower gardens over into town. We briefly stopped in at Three to get some SIM cards for Europe before getting a fruit smoothie at Flirt Cafe. Refreshed from the drinks, we walked back home. Calvin sorted out the Three SIMs before we got ready for the afternoon. After a little rest at home, Joy drove Kate and Calvin out to Christchurch. Christchurch is a quaint town just east of Bournemouth and it was there we strolled around the River Stour and over to an old Norman settlement with some spectacular old ruins of the castle keep from almost a millennia ago. We wandered over to the Christchurch Priory, an old beautiful church, which we looked around inside. Over to the main street of Christchurch to find a hot drink and afternoon tea at the cheery Coast Coffee cafe. Kate and Calvin shared a delectable caramel shortbread slice. Our Three SIMs didn't seem to work so, on the drive towards dinner, we dropped into the Three Store back in Bournemouth where they sorted it out - all it needed was to take the SIM out and pop it back in! We met David at Chez Fred, a very popular fish and chip restaurant in Bournemouth. The fish was fresh and came with unlimited chips (which we didn't even need to utilise since there were plenty of chips already!). A really nice place for dinner. At home, Kate and Calvin packed their bags to get ready to leave for France on the morrow. Once the bags were nearly packed, we all settled down in front of the TV to watch some of Kate's childhood memories - videos of the family which David had recorded over the years and converted onto DVD. It was really special - David, Joy, Kate and Calvin all sitting on the very comfortable couch watching some beautiful recordings from the late 80s to early 90s. Baby Kate and baby Tim featured, little Sarah dancing around, John Young swinging 10 month old Kate in his arms, Trudy (looking like Julie Andrews) organising tunnel ball with balloons, a young John and Linda Roberts looking very familiar to their present day counterparts, and Joy and David (who seem to look the same today as they did over 20 years ago! Kate was busy taking photos of the people on TV to send to the rest of the family! To finish off the night, Kate cleaned her other new shoes which she felt weren't as good as originally thought so she could send them back as well. Then it was time for bed after a nice day exploring the area.
