Soongies' Great Adventure
It was St George's day today and a fine sunny one it was too. The day's activities involved Uncle Richard, Aunty Fiona, Kate, Calvin and Barnaby exploring the Cheshire East countryside. After leaving home and only driving for just 30 minutes, we pulled into Applegate Farm for some cheese scones and hot drinks. There was a wooden play tractor outside which Barnaby wasn't too sure about. From Applegate, we drove on to Cholmondeley (pronounced Chumley), a private estate with a beautiful castle atop the hill and extensive gardens with a tea house on the grounds as well. Couldn't go past the tea house without having a drink! Milkshakes for the kids and coffee for the adults. Then on to Beeston Castle which was quite a popular spot for St George's day activities. We walked up to the top to view the surroundings - extremely green plots of land and some fields of bright yellow canola in full flower. We headed back down to the base to listen to some medieval music and dancing. The dancers headed into the crowd to find some participants to join in so Calvin, Fiona and Kate jumped in to the circle for some peasant dancing. Left, left, left, hop, right, right, right, hop and jump and bounce, bounce, bounce, bounce. Repeat. Calvin had trouble remembering which foot to hop on! Barnaby and Richard were watching although they too were eager to join in - dogs weren't really allowed though. For dinner, it was on to The Dusty Miller - a destination pub in the countryside above the canals. It was a great place with excellent pub food - lamb curry, fish pie, steak and ale pie, chicken and veg pie. Home, with a weary Barnaby and weary humans. Kate and Calvin packed for London before an early bedtime.
