Life in Oz!
I had to be awake and alert before 7am this morning because I was getting a call for an interview. I was a finalist for the Board of Visitors scholarship that I applied for before I left. I was glad that they considered me even though I wasn't at NDSU this semester and that they called for the interview. I think the interview went well, but I will see if I get the scholarship or not. I used Skype to call home after and I got to talk to my niece Taylor! It was fun to hear her voice but she was hard to hear. I called back before I had to leave for my tour hoping to that Carter and Jolene would be back so I could talk to them but they weren't and I had to leave. I did get to talk to Taylor again and she was easier to hear and more talkative. I had to be on the bus at 9:30 for the Hinterland tour. I ended up knowing most of the people on the tour. The bus fit 19 people and it was full. I signed up with Joanna, Kate, Fallon and Karen and their friends Jenny, Megan and Darlene were there too. Tim, Andy, Jake from NDSU, their friends Brendan, and someone else from U of Wyoming, another American that I didn't know, a German and four Japanese people were all on the tour. The Hinterland is a very hilly (I don't think they are quite mountains) subtropical area about 20 minutes from Sunshine Coast. I think we went about 1,400 feet above sea level. Our first stop was the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve and Sanctuary. It holds the last remaining 130 acres of rainforest in the area. We didn't walk through the rainforest because it was raining and all sorts of fun leeches and stuff come out when it rains. I did walk into in a little bit and took a few pictures but mostly wondered around in the part that had lots of pictures of the wildlife inside. We then headed off to the Maleny Mountain Winery for a wine tasting. We tasted about 6 different wines, a range of whites and reds. We had some time to buy wine and look around the inside but it was raining out so we didn't see much outside. We then went to Maleny Cheese, yummmmy! The lady gave us a short explanation of how the cheese factory works and about the different kinds of cheeses and then we got to taste them! There were 14 different kinds of cheeses as well as a few varieties of yoghurt. And yes, I tried them all. I think I ate enough cheese to last me a week, but who can pass up free cheese? I bought some peach mango yoghurt and farmhouse cheese, I don't think they are going to last very long. Once our driver Lynn pulled us all away from the cheese we headed over to Montville for a look around the city and to eat lunch. I got a few good scenery pictures and then we looked around in some shops, it was somewhat touristy but not too bad. We at lunch at Poppy's Takeaway Café, I tried a chicken pie. It was alright, it tasted like a potpie without the vegetables. We looked in a few more shops and then it was time to get on the bus and head to the Settlers Rise Winery for another wine tasting. We tried seven different types of wine and then got a chance to look around the winery again. I got some pictures this time because it wasn't really raining at this point. We were supposed to go to an Emu farm but because of all the rain the road was washed out so we couldn't get to it and I was looking forward to trying some Emu meat. Instead, we went into Maleny and most of us got ice cream at a homemade shop. It was sooo good. We walked around Maleny and ate our ice cream. There were fewer shops then in Montville, it wasn't really touristy at all. We weren't ready to go back to the Uni yet so Lynn took us to Mapleton Falls National Park in the Obi Obi Valley. On the way to the park, we stopped on the side of the road to take pictures of a rainbow that had formed. In the park, we walked down a steep hill and looked at a waterfall. The waterfall was awesome and we were really high up. It was small but the view was amazing. We could see a lot of the valley even though it was somewhat cloudy/hazy from the rain. We arrived back at the Uni just in time for Joanna and me to give our yogurt and cheese to Kate and head to mass. Brendan came with us and church was full so we had a hard time finding a seat. Joanna, Kate and Fallon were going to cook spaghetti for tea and they invited me but I decided not too because I was tired and was going to try to get some studying done. I didn't get much done because I went to bed at 10.
