Left Molinaseca (which we loved) at 0650 as the weather was going to be 30c today and trudged into Ponferrada. The legs were struggling this morning after the big descent yesterday and everything was really hard work today.
However Ponsferrada was like most places we have been to en route with a beautiful church, old bridge, lovely squares etc but it also threw in a 12c Templar castle which is a national monument .
We had some food to try and get us going then left for Cacabalos intending to stay the night there. But as the day wore on we felt better and the scenery was great as we spent the rest of the day walking through the vineyards of the Bierzo region. We also had a little wine tasting at one Bodega en route.
As we were going so well we decided to carry on to Villafranca del Bierzo which sounded a better option. And it is a lovely place full of history as it has been major stop for pilgrims since 11century. For a small town of 5000 people it has 7 churches and 15c castle.
As we had done 32km today we decided to book into the parador which was one of the few places that still had available rooms.
We have decided to have a late start tomorrow to recover and not attempt the steepest climb of the whole trip to O'Cebreiro - 4000 ft in 6km - so we will take it over 2 days.

Arkwright Well done on descending 3,000 feet, def harder than climbing 5,000. We went to the lakes 2 weeks ago, descending was a nightmare on the knees and it was tiny in comparison to yours! Going to London for day tomorrow to show boys the attractions, tried to persuade them to watch Huddersfield in play off final at wembley but dinosaurs at the natural history museum won out! Sal, just keep thinking of those British cushions etc...'keep calm and carry on!'xx
laurieandsally Arkwright good to hear from you and would recommend poles for down hill descents as they make a huge difference on the knees. Also as the Shrews got promoted to league one we might be playing Huddersfield next season which would be a good excuse to come and see you for our away match. That's assuming the Blades beat your lot tomorrow . L
Sue M Hi Both, only just cought up on blog! Sounds like it's a challenge but hugely fulflling. Love the routine of walk, eat, beer, blog, sleep. Have you kept count of the number of churches you have been in?? Hope you can keep motivated and the weather holds for you.
laurieandsally Sue it's lovely to hear from you and the routine is correct except have shower together with dirty washing needs to be included! We are still loving the whole experience but not looking forward to the big climb tomorrow morning. L and S xx
