Soongies' Great Adventure
Last day in London this time round. We said our goodbyes in the morning to Vicki who had to drag herself off to work today. Packed up and off to Fulham to meet up with Jess (ex-Greenhill volunteer) and her 5 month old son, Mads. Jess' place was a little far from any tube stop so we ended up taking the bus to get up to Fulham. Transport system in London is pretty comprehensive and pretty efficient (when there are no breakdowns!). It was fun riding on the red double decker buses and the Citymapper app is so useful! We met Jess and Mads in their apartment and went round the corner to a small cafe for brunch. Kate's stomach was well and truly rumbling by this time. It was nice catching up with Jess and meeting Mads who was pretty happy to be out and about. We then went off to King's College London to meet up with Stefan (also ex-Greenhill volunteer). We got the bus and tube to Temple station and, after a little bit of hide and seek, finally met up in front of Somerset House! Stefan is the IT guru at King's College and he showed us around the campus buildings and walked over on Fleet Street to the library going past the Australian Centre, Twinings Tea original shop, and the grand Royal Courts of Justice which is the place to go for important announcements on matters of state (including news on Brexit). On the way back from the library building to the Strand campus, we saw lots of cameras, microphones and reporters gathering outside the Royal Courts of Justice but we didn't stick around to find out what or make any cameo appearances. After catching up with (the recently engaged) Stefan, we made our way back on the train to Maidenhead where John met us to pick us up and drive us back home. Kate's shoes had arrived - well, one pair had. The other had gone back to the post office. So a little detour on the way home to pick it up - it was a blessing it was actually there as the notice said it would have to be picked up tomorrow! Once we got home, Kate very excitedly tried on both of her new shoes to compare the pairs. To trial them properly without dirtying them, Kate wore the shoes with plastic bags tied around them. The neighbours thought she was a little bit loopy watching her walk up and down the driveway in plastic bags! Auntie Joy (Kate's dad's sister) came by for dinner at around 5:30 pm. She was on her way back from working in Banbury and came by Maidenhead to pick Calvin and Kate up to drive to Bournemouth. After a spectacular dinner of cottage pie made by Linda and a scrumptious chocolate cake made by Tesco, we farewelled the wonderful John and Linda and Joy drove us down south to her wonderful 1920s mansion in Bournemouth. It was about 9:30 pm by the time we arrived to the house with many rooms and ensuites. Joy led us up to the third floor where our luxurious room (with king size bed) was for the next 2 nights. Calvin and Kate went on the grand tour of the home - very elegantly styled and furnished with timeless pieces - before retiring to bed.
