We got woken around 8am this morning, as campers all over the place were packing up and heading home. It took us a while to get out of bed and then we too packed up and were on the road by 10am. Johanna Beach has been a great free camp but I'm definitely feeling the need to move on. The kids have completely forgotten about 'stranger danger' and some of the long termers here have made my alarm bells ring! The plan was to spend the next two nights in Lorne at a caravan park we found that had cheap rates however things don't always turn out as we plan! We took the Great Ocean Road but unfortunately so did everyone else who was heading home after the long weekend and we averaged about 40kms/hr! We drove through places we had planned a stop at such as Wye River and Kennett River as there was nowhere free to park. We reached Lorne about 12 noon and crawled into town at 20 kms/hr as the Great Ocean Road goes through the town centre. There were people everywhere! The beach was packed, the parks were full and every café and bar looked crowded. It looked like a great place but we overshot the caravan park and couldn't find anywhere to turn around - before we knew it we were in Aireys Inlet, which was just as crowded! We decided to continue on instead of turn around as Lorne would be hell exploring while so busy and instead we came to Ocean Grove. Ocean Grove is just across the bridge from Barwon Heads where they filmed Sea Change and the caravan park is on a spit so the estuary is on one side of the park and the ocean is just across the road. It's huge with 502 sites but we scored a weekly rate of $200 for the 6 of us so it is ideal. Our spot is perfect and the park is quiet and clean - luxury after a long weekend free camping!! We set the whole annex up and for the first time it went up without a hitch then we went for a walk along the river trying to find a café as we had all missed lunch. The walk was beautiful but no cafes in site so we jumped in the car and went back across the bridge to Barwon Heads. From the bridge we spotted a great café jutting out over the mouth of the estuary called Barwon Grove. It looked a bit like Diver Dans house in Sea Change! We ordered 4 lemonades, 4 bowls of ice-cream, 2 coffees, a HUGE piece of chocolate cake that fed 6, a large bowl of chips with aioli, and then bread, dips and olives all for $50 and served with a smile - you don't get that in WA!! Matty, Jonny and Anna played on the beach while we enjoyed the afternoon eating feeling at peace in our new surroundings! Eventually we headed back into Ocean Grove and found a Coles to restock the fridge. We had a bit of an explore on the way home and got back around 6pm. I cooked the kids dinner while Nick checked out real estate prices (!!) and then we had a relaxing night in front of the TV. All was going very well until I had a shower and broke the k*** that tightens the showerhead holder to the pole. Nick had to take the whole shower holder frame apart as it had all rusted through and now needs a trip to Geelong tomorrow for parts - bloody Jayco!!
