Woke really early (for us anyway) at 7am and decided to get up and showered before the kids woke up. We packed up the van after breakfast and were on the road by 9am. It was a beautiful day - very clear and the sun was shining - so we saw some stunning glimpses of the ocean as we travelled along the Great Ocean Road. We decided not to pull in to any of the look out points with the van (we will come and do it again tomorrow and take our time) and we were very glad we didn't as they were jam packed with cars of all shapes and sizes but no one seemed to be going our way. It took about two and a half hours to get to Johanna Beach on the western side on Cape Otway, as the roads were steep and windy. We arrived just before lunch which is good timing for a free camp as most people who are moving on have packed up and gone but not too many have moved in. Johanna camp is fairly big with three different grassed areas of varying size. We picked a fairly small flat spot because it was near the toilets for the kids and it turned out a good idea as the other two areas, which were bigger, soon filled up and the vans were all packed in like sardines. We settled the van and had lunch and coffee and then Nick and the boys went off to walk the beach. I needed a few hours of quiet time in the sun - I'm finding I get a bit apprehensive before each move to a free camp, as you are never sure what you will find. Most of the camps are great but the atmosphere in them changes on a daily basis depending on the people you are sharing them with. Although this place is busy it seems to be full of graying nomads thank goodness rather then backpackers. The 'oldies' tend to take us under their wing and look after us and keep an eye on our van when we're not here. We had only been here 10 minutes when a lovely couple called us over to see an echidna burrowing into the drain by the toilet block! The girls didn't know what to do with themselves while the boys were out walking so I gave them some schoolwork to do - it didn't go down well! Once Nick got back he entertained them all with multiple games of cards and soccer. We had an early dinner and by the time we had finished another family with kids the same age had arrived and they all ran around together. It got cold quickly so everyone went to bed early and watched a dvd. We did several episodes of The Killing - excellent viewing!!
