Eventually woke up around 830am after an interrupted night's sleep with the kids getting up and down for the toilet - thank goodness we have one in the van!! It was another beautiful day (32 degrees) so we decided to skip schoolwork and after breakfast headed out along the Great Ocean Road. We have got into the pattern of topping up the water tanks from the containers on the top of the car before we go anywhere so that if we find water en route we can fill up and always be at maximum capacity. Our first stop was Lavers Hill, the closest little village to Johanna Beach. There are a couple of cafes, a petrol station and a general store. The general store also doubles as an information centre so we asked if they had drinking water taps available for the public but no go as no rain recently. For this drive we banned all ipods and dvd players and it may have been a mistake on our part as it wasn't very peaceful! Our first sightseeing stop was the Twelve Apostles. You park on the opposite side of the road and take a walkway under the road out to the viewing platforms. The car park was packed and I think we heard every nationality as we travelled the viewing platforms. The coast was stunning and the water a magic colour in the sun. Anna was ready for home after that little walk - did she have a shock in store! Next stop was Loch Ard Gorge and everyone walked the first part but Katharine and I did the second part by ourselves as the little legs had had enough. We stopped in Port Campbell for lunch, a beautiful little town built around a fantastic beach. There was a large tourist information centre and a very helpful person gave us a heap of maps for free camping all the way to Geelong. She also said we could help ourselves to as much drinking water as we wanted from a tap in the local park. Nick filled the containers while I went to the local bakery for lunch and the kids played. At the bakery I ran into the Port Hedland crew we had met in Streaky Bay and Adelaide and they came back to the park to eat and catch up. It was gone 3pm by the time we hit the road again and we stopped off at The Arch, London Bridge and The Grotto before heading home. The plan was meant to be schoolwork when we got back but we were all too tired so instead we had an hour reading before cooking dinner. By the time we had finished eating the vans were pulling in in a steady stream and the camp seemed very full. We showered before it got dark and everyone watched a movie before bed.
