Our school is having a week long art festival. This began with an official ribbon cutting ceremony which I was asked to participate in. The entrance to the gymnasium had a balloon archway and a multicoloured ribbon held across. The principal, visiting officials, and other teachers all held a section of the ribbon with a pair of scissors. We were also asked to wear white gloves. On a count of three we each cut our section of the ribbon.
The art display is actually quite amazing for middle school students. Their english may not be at a high level but they are very gifted in other areas. Some of the exhibits were so advanced for middle school, these were things you would expect to see at art college.
At the start were miniature buildings. They had traditional korean homes as well as modern western ones. They had painted plaster figureheads. The most noticeable one was Marge Simpson. There were various other types of crafts you would see in a craft bazaar.
The other side of the hall had more artwork. Some were of K-Pop stars done in an interesting way. They mixed actual photo cutouts with hand drawn portions to fill in the blanks. They also had a section of cariciatures of teachers and one of me again. Again, all of this was quite impressive.
Kids like to just come up to me, stick their hand out, and demand candy. One girls has been doing this so I tried to teach her three steps: 1. say hello; 2. ask how are you; 3. ask 'may I' have candy rather than going straight to step 3 with 'give me candy'! She mastered it but she keeps asking so I dont want to keep giving her candy all the time.
In class she asked for candy so I said to sit down. Then she asked for chocolate so again I asked her to sit down. Then she asked for pizza so I gestured where is the pizza, I dont have any? Then she told me I was 'garbage'! Now she has retracted her statement when it comes to handing out candy again.
A group of boys was being bad a while back. I make them stay behind to clean the classroom. Unfortunately the weather was still warm and I had the back window opened. I didnt notice and every time my back was turned trying to bring them to order a boy would jump out the back window. My class is the ground floor so they would just run away. It got to three boys before I noticed so closed the window.
I actually found this quite hilarious and commendable but have to discourage such behaviour. So I got their names from the other students and reported them to their homeroom teacher so made them come back after school to clean properly.
