If you've ever wandered what it's like to be "taken downtown" and spend the night in a police cell a newly opened museum in Daegu might just answer that. The Police History Experience Hall is a new museum in Daegu's Jungno district, across the road from Gyeongsang Gamyeong park and the Daegu Modern History Museum which allows you to explore inside disused police cells and see what a "lock up" is truly like. For this afternoons activity as part of our School Club Day trip we had arranged for a visit. The outside is a typical office or institutional building deceptively masking its interior secrets. The museum entrance is just off the main lobby and leads you into a circular two level prison holding area. You wouldnt have expected this from the building exterior. It is a two level stacked semi circle with five cells on each level. The second floor has a platform area where a prison officer can stand and watch over the upper and lower level cells. The cells however have now been converted into a different exhibit for each cell. The first cell is just an ordinary cell where people can simulate what life would be like on the inside, with some blankets and a food tray. Another cell was a costume dress up area for children with mens and womens hats as well as small uniforms. One was the history of uniforms over the decades. On the upper floor they had a riot uniform officer, old office equipment, weapons such as swords and guns, and handcuffs. Back on the ground floor was a mock security control room with a desk to see the feed from the rotating security camera from the upper floor. Many students were being camera shy and kept spinning away from my camera. Also on the ground floor was a detention cell next to a height bar where you could crawl thru a space to the other side. It was fun for the students to pretend their friend was in jail and they were visiting. By far the most popular as you can see from the many pics was the police motorcycle. I've never sat on one this large and felt more like a buggy than a moped. Every student wanted to take turns, as did me and the other teacher. Strangely outside were some riot uniform officers who later went into a bus waiting outside. I guess this may be a practice drill as Daegu is one of the safest places I've ever lived or visited. Finally all the students posed in the jail cell for a group pic, although one of them was enjoying being locked up a bit too much. This was a really fun museum I had no idea existed right where I always hang out downtown. It helped make for a complete and fun day as part of our Club Day outing.
