24 Aug 2012
Friday was the day I had to meet with the rental office again and pay the first months rent, the $1500 balance of the $2000 key money I had agreed to rent the place, and the agents commission. The heavy rain we've had all week was starting to tail off Surprisingly a large group of army cadets in uniforms were marching down the street and rapidly dissapeared so not sure where they were heading I wasnt sure whether to pay all the money about $2000 in cash or electronically transfer. To avoid any misunderstanding as I'm not sure what the normal procedure was I decided on cash. I had to stop by the bank to withdraw in multiples of 1,000,000w as it wouldnt let me do the full amount. At the agents office I divided the appropriate amounts payable to the agent and landlord and gave the agent his present which I brought from Canada which he was very happy with. I asked if the gas and electric had been connected and whether I would be getting bills for the previous tenant but they assured me I wouldnt. Finally I was given the entry codes to the apartment so I anxiously headed over for my first look. I only ever had one viewing in July before I went home for the summer. The guy living there had lots of oversize furniture cluttering the place so I'd never really got a proper look. As I excitedly walked over I couldnt figure out how to enter the entry codes on the main door. This worked different from the building I'm in now but luckily there were people working in the store beside who showed me how to do it. The landlord came down to meet me and showed me into the apartment where the codes worked fine. Surprisingly the place was very clean as I thought I'd have to go in there and clean. I'm not sure who is responsible for cleaning but I'm getting the impression that apartments are to be cleaned thouroughly upon vacating. This was strange as the first apartment that I had when I arrived had cobwebs and took me a month of cleaning to get all the sewer smells out of the drains. The place now seemed a lot bigger and I was getting my first proper look around. The gas hadnt been connected but the lights were working. The kitchen sink was actually quite large, I could baptize babies in there, and there was a pull out shower style faucet to reach the other side. Also there were three rings on the stove, a sign I'm moving up in the world as most apartments have two. The bathroom was very clean as I remember the guy was using the toilet to throw cigarettes in and had stained it. This had been very well cleaned by somebody before I arrived. There were also high quality finishes in the tilework. The heating control panel was not the same as my old apartment so I'd have to ask someone to explain how to use it. I only need warm water right now to take a shower but the gas wasnt connected anyway. The bedroom had been cleared of all furniture. The guy had a double bed, large computer desk and swivel office chair, and the largest size massive flat screen tv on its own long cabinet, so now I could see the real room size. Also I had clear access to the laundry room. When I came to view I couldnt even get in as the overhead clothes hanger was completely full of clothes and he had another two clothes racks below completely filling the room so nobody could get in. I've never seen a guy with so many clothes before (unless he's a fasion designer) as he had another clothes rack in the main living room and yet another one in the entrance area. Surprisingly now I discovered an extra storage area with shelves on the other side of the laundry area which I never saw during the viewing, so now extra space to store my suitcases. The laundry room also had clear glass windows, as most are frosted, so this will allow extra light. There were also bars to secure the windows as this is a ground floor apartment. There was also a nice view of the trees in the garden behind, distant mountains and blue sky. I wanted to stay and appreciate the new place but I had to rush back and pack everything friday nite for the saturday big move. The landlord also told me my neighbour was a korean english teacher so anxious to talk to her too and find out what school she is at.
