Here is the latest installment of the ongoing cultural battle of koreans having prejudiced stereotypes against foreigners. This time a group of foreigners had a beach party at Wando Beach in Jeolla province, a small coastal town. Aside from getting drunk, they were running naked on the beach, broke into a locked washroom under construction with no plumbing, relieving themselves causing an unhealthy mess, and left lots of trash on the beach Locals have said they do not want foreigners on their beach again, and the regional co-ordinator of the foreigner public school program has warned that such behaviour is putting the future of the program at risk in some communities. http://thethreewisemonkeys.com/2012/07/ 12/drunk-and-stupid-how-debauched-forei gners-feed-koreans-prejudices/ The comments on this thread speak for themselves. One commentor stated that people should not be using a foreign country as their own private frat house. Would it be morally acceptable for a public school teacher to be running naked on a beach back home, drunk, breaking into locked public property??? They would get suspended and face disciplinary action. Comment 49 is the response from the regional program co-ordinator. I agree it is a poor attitude for some people to think that since they're going back home in a month or so that they dont have to care about the consequences of their perceived actions. This leaves the foreigners still in korea to deal with the consequences and affects future teachers with more restrictive rules and cutting of perks. Why do I have to constantly pay for drugs tests at my own expense because some teachers were caught smoking marijuana? I think they need to raise the min age to 25 to try to encourage more responsible adults. Koreans are too timid to confront them at the time and call the police, and just blame all the foreigners after. Stories like this make the media and rumour mill. This just makes a lot of us angry that have made the effort to learn the language, be a part of everyday life, and positive examples of foreigners
