Adventures of a Global Wanderer
The next leg of our weekend trip took us to Suncheon. We had wanted to goto Namhae Island but there are no direct buses from Boseong. Also we felt because of the long weekend it might be hard to find a place. Suncheon did however turn out to be full of surprises with a lively nightlife we hadnt expected to see for such an off the map location. Instead of heading to Namhae Island from the Boseong Tea Fields we had stopped halfway at Suncheon from where there are direct buses to Namhae. It cost us 5800w from Boseong to Namhae ($5). Another worry for Suncheon was that because its close to the Yeoso Expo site and being a holiday weekend there might be overflow people from Yeoso looking for a place. Fortunately, it worked out ok when we arrived. When we arrived there were several motels near the bus station. I had wanted to goto a sauna again to save money but my friends wanted a motel. I suggested we go further from the terminal and each go and ask in separate motels but my friend went into the first one. At first the lady said 40,000w ($36) it being a holiday weekend and close to the expo site. I told my friend we should leave and look around some more. Then the lady ran after us and said we could have it for 30,000w ($27). Looking at the room I didnt feel all three of us could have stayed there and I thought maybe we ask for a second room. With my limited korean I asked her if we could have two rooms for 50,000w ($22 each) and handed her the additional 20,000w. After hesitating the owner couple just agreed and handed a key rather than haggling. Then we decided to walk around for the evening exporing this small town, which insists on being called 'Suncheon City'. After a while we discovered an 'Asia Mart' back by the bus terminal, which seemed to have so many imported asian goods in this small town. When we returned to the motel we noticed some pink stores lit up beside. Inside they had booths with pink lighting. I wanted to peek inside but a lady came and stood outside. Also a man walking by noticing us three foreigners said 'no' as he continued to walk past us. I guess we thought these were some kind of brothels which seemed strange for a quiet small town. Back in the hotel room all I could hear was fighting and screaming for the next hour or so coming from the alley by these pink shops. A drunk man was fighting with a woman, maybe his wife. I dont know if she wasnt happy for him going drinking again. My friend said the lady kept saying 'tea house'. After a while a police car came down the alleyway. The next morning I was severely sick so had to cut my trip short and return back to Daegu while my friends continued to Namhae Island. The bus terminal had direct shuttle buses to the Yeoso Expo. Also there was a large farmers market on sunday morning. Suncheon is a nice place to visit for a weekend and a convenient place to stay if you are going to the Yeoso Expo, Namhae Island, or travelling the south coast. However, I dont think I could live there permanently despite the lively local nightlife.
