18 May 2012
Friday was school sports day. This is held once ever school year and is full of colourful activities. Classes are each dressed in a team costume and students compete in a variety of fun games while avoiding a days worth of classes. This is my third sports day since I've been with my current school. The day begins with an assembly type gathering of all classes at the front of the field for the Principals address and some warm up exercises. Then classes divide back and take turns playing in the field As well as wearing class costumes they also had decorated tents for each class. I thought the school provided a budget for each classes costume but when I asked a teacher I was told the students pay for it themselves. I was curious as some classes had straw hats while others didnt, and some had two piece outfits whereas others were just a t-shirt. The teacher said the students were very eager for the costumes so willing to pay for it. I'm not sure how much of that is conformity and whether low income families could afford it, although cost ranged from $10-$20 for each student depending on what the class costume was. Some parents will come to support their kids or to volunteer in the food booths. I wanted to buy some mid morning snacks but knew I had to hide from the kids or would keep getting asked for some. I bought some flat pancakes the mothers had made and had to turn down about 20 kids asking me to give them one, how I was handsome, their favourite teacher, and they loved me. Students are given snacks and drinks provided by the school but I didnt want to take from any of the class boxes so the students could have extra leftovers. Even so, they came after me again when I went and bought a drink. They passed a lot of the time waiting around in the shade by starting water fights. They were also surprised to see me in half sleeves and curious about the hair on my arms. One student said I had fur since most koreans have little body hair and they wanted to keep plucking my hair. The afternoon ended with a student K-Pop dance and awards, and it was time for a big cleanup after all days festivities.
