Teaching is a natural ability some of us have, and some of us dont, and takes many forms outside of school.
Many of us are teachers but dont get recognized for it as it wasnt thru a public learning institution
(parents, siblings, friends, neighbours, pastor, employer, co-worker, instructor, volunteers).
I was doing corporate training and broker seminars for their professional licencing credits, but this is not recognized as "teaching" in the industry. I create my own original lessons and dont download off waygook. I entered the teaching community later in my career so dont have the time or money to reinvest in going back to teachers college. Does this mean I am a "bad" teacher?
The entry requirement is too broad to let anyone from the 7 speaking countries with a degree and clean criminal check in. There should be a further qualification of teaching credentials OR proven teaching experience such as mine to let non certified teachers in as well. Hiring somone thats 22 invites a variety of problems. There are people that shouldnt be here so perhaps a minimum age limit of 24 is needed
I am muslim so I dont drink alcohol. Many of my friends are Christian and are active in their church. They are involved in community events such as volunteering in orphanages and animal shelters.
I am very interested in learning about korean culture. I am actively taking korean classes, as are many foreigners in my city. I use my language skills in the class to translate and explain things again to students in two ways. They in turn correct me and help me improve my korean.
Almost every weekend me and my friends are travelling to different places in korea. I have probably been to more places in my year and a half than many of my co-teachers who often remark they havent been to a particular place I'm going to since they were in school.
I actively write about the places I visit in korea in my blog for my friends back home. This has been recognized by the Korean Ministry of Culture and Tourism and am now a contributing writer for their blogsite TheKoreaBlog. Several foreign bloggers living in Korea were used to promote Jeju in its bid to become the new 7th Natural World Wonder and we were rewarded with the title of 'Ambassador and Committee Member'.
I've always founds koreans to be very polite and welcoming to me whichever town or city I have visited. This has unfortunately not developed into close friendships with many koreans. Partly we both have low language skills in each others language.
Co-Teachers are not taking advantage of having a native teacher in their school. They dont talk to me, sometimes dont show up for class, or just sleep or read a book at the back. This is not preparing them to take over if we leave. I know some of them have very low english, partly why they wont talk to me.
Some of my classes are bad, sometimes I'm killing time. But I think I am making a good effort to come up with a decent cirriculum and weekly plan, especially when nobody ask me what I am going to teach, and they showed no interest when I showed the term outline.
I make a difference with my kids. Many of them will talk to me outside of class and when they see me in the neighbourhood. I know many of the 'low level' kids can talk as we do outside of class but unfortunately this does not show up in their test scores and they are branded as low level. Conversely some 'high level' kids wont talk to me yet they are better able to memorize and get into higher level classes.
