Two things I love eating are bread and pizza. I'm quite lucky that in my new neighbourhood I'm spoilt for choices with both bakeries and pizza restaurants all less than a10 minute walk. I like eating lots of baked goods and western style grain bakeries are not that common. Koreans prefer rice cake which is a sticky chewy mixture that can be made in different ways. The bakeries I did find did not have a wide selection are rarely different types of grain or wholewheat bread. Its also just crust with fluff on the inside so not too filling. Two different students at my old school owned bakeries so I would sometimes make a special trip and became good friends with one of the mothers where I would buy a baguette for 1500w ($1.35). Korea is a bit strange for Asia as Japan, Taiwan, China, and Hong Kong all have many types of delicous baked goods found easily. Luckily my new neighbourhood seems to be abundant with bakeries They still dont have grain or wholewheat breads and average prices are about $3 so not as cheap as the bargain ones in Taiwan for $1 or Vietnam as low as .25 cents!! My other favourite is pizza. These can sometimes be ridiculously priced as much as $30 at sit down restaurants for what would be considered 'medium' size back home. Cheese is another western food item not that popular or commonly sold in Korea, with limited choice and high prices (hence I brought six bars in my suitcase on my recent trip). There are budget take out pizza restaurants for under $10 but they were not near my old apartment so I'd have to make a special trip. Now suddenly I have FIVE within a few minutes walk to work or school. Popular budget chain Pizza Bingo is just across the big intersection, but opposite the school is also Pizza Maru. Closer to my apartment is Skybori Pizza and another Paris Baguette (only 3 mins from their other location). I went to Skybori Pizza the day I moved in. They had a wholewheat crust pizza for only 4500w ($4) so quite cheap and healthy. They're only 3 mins from my apartment. Also closer than them is another chicken restaurant that also serves pizza but I havent checked their menu.
