The history of Daegu in the Modern era can be traced thru photography and the technological changes of the 20th century. Daegu is also the origin of Samsung industries which began as a local family business selling apples. The Daegu Modern History Museum downtown is an interesting two storey building showcasing the role the city has played in the changing fortunes of the region. Friday at school there were no classes due to club activity day. Usually in the past we had gone to the movie theatre. This time each club was going on a field trip. I joined with one of the teachers to go with her club to the Daegu Modern History Museum which is located at Jungangno downtown at one end of Gyeongsang Gamyeong park. As this was a local museum downtown we took a city bus to the museum, whereas other clubs had private coaches to take them to out of town locations. I had been to this museum before so guided the group of students and teacher from the bus stop. Many of the students were being camera shy when I tried to take photos even though there were taking pics of each other on their cellphones. Its a small interesting two storey building next to Gyeongsang Gamyeong Park. I'm not sure of the original use but it has interesting exterior and interior architecture. The ground floor shows the original Daegu train station long since demolished and rebuilt as a combination metro station and department store. It also shows various methods of communication and transport such as a gramaphone player, mouthpiece telephone, and two wheel rickshaw. The most interesting photo for westerners is on the ground floor showing Marilyn Munroes visit to the Daegu Air Base The second floor is a photo gallery so had interesting exhibits of many historic sites around korea including Pyeongyang in North Korea. When we were done we crossed the Jungangno intersection and headed south to the Herbal Street Festival. The direct route was via Jungno which is also the main street of Daegu's small Chinatown. Recently the city has spent money renovating this street to make it a more tourist friendly themed area. There are new paved sidewalks, hanging street signs, trees, and sculptures. There is a school for overseas chinese which is decorated in interesting artwork along the entrance alleyway. Daegu's chinatown may not be as big as Incheon or Busan but the city still proudly boasts its heritage in an annual chinatown festival. here are more pictures from my first visit last year http://blog.travelpod.com/travel-blog-e ntries/londone7/1/1311612094/tpod.html and a walking tour of nearby Daegu's colonial past, victorian churches and stained glass http://blog.travelpod.com/travel-blog-e ntries/londone7/1/1309339244/tpod.html
