Adventures of a Global Wanderer
This morning checked out of the hotel in Jeju city and decided to go first to Loveland. From my map it was easy directions to get to from my hotel but a bit of a walk. Turned out its a 3km walk. I tried to take a bus but I couldnt figure it out. The road was on an incline as the centre of the island is a volcano and we were heading inland from the coast. It became a country road with fast traffic and no pavements. After a while they were doing construction and there was a detor.
There was nobody around, this was a remote area now, so I flagged down a cab. Turned out I was already there as he just turned the corner and drove me in but I had to pay the minimum $2. Loveland is famous in korea and is a park full of sculptures of nude peope in sexual positions. ok, a bit silly and maybe not worth $8 ticket.
Outside of Loveland is 'the mysterious road', where cars will drive upwards by themselves. This is actually an illusion as the road is slanted but the foilage is lopsided giving the impression you are magically rolling uphill. Then I had to get another cab to Psyche World.
The way the road layout is, I was on a north south road, and I wanted a diaganol road from Jeju city to the coast. I wasnt about to walk the 10km it said on the sign. By bus I would have to go back into town, change, and take another bus back out. The bus into town runs every hour on the north south road. Anyway, it cost $15 cab ride but was very scenic with mountain roads.
People always talk about Jeju as a honeymoon capital and its natural beauty. But there are so many silly crazy museums that it can keep you busy for days. There are two sex museums, two teddy bear museums, two miniature world museums, and a vast range of others I plan to visit ranging from Chocolate, Africa, Cars, Alice in Wonderland, Trick Art, Dinosaurs, and many others.
Psyche World is three such museums. Next door is Queens House which is a royal palace museum. Inside they had the tiara of Lady Diana Spencer before her marriage, and jewels from other movie stars like Marilyn Munroe, Audrey Hepburn, and Princess Grace Kelly. The best part was the Queen Victoria State Room where they had portraits of her and her coronation, and a fullsize dress, in an elaborate room with decorations and chandaliers.
Next was Psyche World. This had different areas. First was butterfly and insect scenes where they used plastic ones to create many scenes such as epic battles, and some bizzare situations. Outdoor there was a maze and people walking on rope bridges. I tried the maze but got fedup of going round and round (and also decided going to Maze World with the worlds largest maze was going to be a waste of time). The best part was the mirror maze. Here there are hallways of mirrors and it becomes quite disorienting. I kept thinking someone was walking towards me but it was my reflection.
Then I wanted to get on the bus south to the coast as this was the main bus route unlike before. Figuring out the bus stop on the highway was quite confusing but it was only a 30 min ride to the south coast. First I want to Cheonjiyeon waterfalls. This is koreas niagara falls as everyone was posing here.
After checked into my hotel. Its on a cliff overlooking the harbour and practically on top of the falls but the foilage all obscures the view. They have me on the top floor but facing the city. I asked to be changed to the seaview but they are all booked. I went into the empty room when the maid was cleaning and got some great shots. Make sure you have 6th floor room 22 for the best view.
Then wanted to head over to Jeongbang falls another falls nearby. Closeby they had a free museum about some chinese people that came to jeju in historic times. China and korea have always been friends, and this was quite an interesting museum reproducing the terra cotta warriors. I think the story is the general from china helped in some battle with a dragon to protect jeju island.
Behind was Jeongbang falls. This is the only falls in asia that opens onto the ocean. Again some scenic shots. There is a rock on the other side of town Oedolgae which as some story attached to it to about it being disguised as a military statue to scare off mongolian soldiers. It was too long of a walk and it was getting quite misty so I decided to skip it.
For late lunch they have many seafood restaurants but I didnt want grilled fish again from yesterday. I found a place with seafood soup. The picture had a table of many side dishes. I asked for the seafood soup. The served me everything in the picture with 1001 and side dishes. I had to send the meat items back, it was too much. There was seafood soup, rice, glass noodles, salad, eggplant, kimchi, other pickled vegetables, another fish dish, and i'm sure more that I cant remember.
Outside there was a bridge to an island. It is shaped like the burj dubai bridge. They built a walkway around the circumference of the island which is about 1km. The island is really just a giant rock but had some alien landscape. Now headed back to the hotel to maybe catch the sunset if its not too misty.
Am really liking the atmosphere of jeju, I would transfer here in an instant. The climate and feel is different, and so much to do from biking, hiking, and water activities.

I was invited back to Jeju for a Press tour in Oct/11, you can read the entry here
