Trollhättan is famous for its waterfall. To get there we had to sail to the very bottom of the lake 19 nm, it again was windless and so hot we stopped mid lake and jumped into the water for a swim. After passing the huge road and rail bridges at Vänersborg we anchored in the first lake for the night. Lake Vassbotten we then moved on down to the small Marina at the top of the massive locks. The falls here were the reason ships were unable to get from the sea to the lake some 42 meters above sea level. There have been 3 sets of locks here over the years, all are still visible today. The four modern locks are the biggest we have ever been in but they are remarkably easy to use, they are all operated remotely so no lock keepers on site. Lake Vänern is huge and the water flowing from it is 500,000 litres per second so in 1909 it was decided to dam the river, at the time the world largest dam, to make a hydro power station. We took the tour and found that it is still running to this day with the same turbines. When it was built they predicted that it would make all the power for the whole of Europe for ever more but by the First World War it was already needing to be extended. The falls are now dry except at 15.00 everyday when thy open the sluices and 300,000 litres per second flow down the falls, now one of Sweden's most popular tourist attractions.
