We had an unadventurous night sail across from Gotland to Latvia, light winds and almost no darkness, we had a few hours of fog after dawn and for the first time our radar was used in anger. It is very reassuring to know that there is nothing in front of you as you plough on into solid fog. Ventspils is a large town and has benefitted from European money. There is a lovely old narrow gauge steam train that was made in 1915 in Germany to pull supply's up to the front line during WW1 and somehow they have a station from England. The town of Ventspils may be modernised but we took a bus ride out to Kuldīga 60 kms. The country is still very poor with lots of derelict buildings. There are some modern farms but a lot are still working the land by hand. Kuldīga has the destination of having Europe's widest waterfall, we were able to walk across the top as it is not very deep, the water was presently warm. We think we have pot hole problems in the uk, it nothing compared to there roads.
