Söderköping is only 3 NM from Mem and 3 locks, we are moored side too right in the centre. There were about 15 boats waiting for Monday morning, the start of the free flow for traffic on the canal. Trevor and Lesley had to be here to catch a bus home, by 12.30 so I knew we were going to struggle. At 08.00 we moved right to the front, outside the lock then waited till 09.00 for the office to open. I was first to register and we locked in at 10.30 and arrived here at 11.45 enabling the guys to catch there bus. We were the first boat of the season to come through and the first UK Cruising Association yacht of the summer season. The lock here still has its original iron work on one set of gates the other set needed to be repaired in 1910 when the steamer Juno's engineer misheard the skippers instructions and went full ahead instead of full astern putting the ship and lock out of action for week or two. This evening we enjoyed a walk up to the top of the Ramunderberget a 70 M high hill that overlooks the town. In the winter they use the paths for cross country skiing.
