Tuesday 19 January
The day starts much the same bit we head out once Malcolm is back. We stop at one store to get a few things. We try and return the scales. The leaflet says the device had a year warranty for any defects and they didn't work straight of the box. Lori already tried to return them, but I was determined. They get looked at by at least 3 men, but eventually they give us a new set. One man seemed a bit worried that the box was broken, I tried to point out that the warranty is for the device, and if something had happened after 6 months and returned them I would be unlikely to even have the box! They were brought on the seventh and the wanted to know why I took so long to return them. Argh!! I didn't say there had been an unsuccessful return attempt already, bit that we live out in monduli. The man asking all these questions didn't even really seem to have a say on whether we got the warranty met! Next we head out to the cafe where we are meeting Hannah's friend for lunch. We go through a police stop and they fine us for the back brake light not working. They are pretty mean to white ppl here and seem to love to stop them and find something to fine them on. While we are stopped we see another car go past with only 1 brake light. Grrr. I think over the course of the day we get stopped a few things. When we get stopped again they comment that my seatbelt is across my shoulder and not my neck, but thankfully do not fine us. It certainly raises our ire! Lunch of delicious sandwiches and cookies is great and it's nice to meet Ashley. We go shopping nearby for daycare things then We drop Malcolm off for his dental appointment and go back I to town. We have a successful trip. The last stop is to the furniture store to get a desk before collecting Malcolm. We pick one quick but after taking our money they try and raise the price by 50000. But back down after Hannah complains. Sometimes it's dumb being a white person here. It feels like we are always fighting for fairness. Malcolm walks a far distance and he is close to pick up. Next we hit the post shop to look out for Hannah's lost package but no luck. While we do this Malcolm checks out a service station for the light bulb. It turns out there is a genuine Toyota place nearby where we can get it. We have to tip a local man that leads us there. He tries to sell us his expensive paintings. We get a message from the daycare that the smoothie blender is broken so we stop and buy a new one. Lastly an ATM stop and calming ice cream and Malcolm drives us home. Town is stressful! We enjoy pita's and lentils for dinner. We shower and chill out. It feels like so many battles here. I wonder how you can run something here when everything seems against you. Ppl don't listen and certainly don't do as you ask. It feels like trying to manage a group of disobedient children and it's hard work!
