I was a bit freaked out with the thought of having to cycle 70km today. We didnt leave until nearly 10am after a great breakfast that was prepared by John our Scottish BNB host. He cooked the boiled egg perfectly - must be because he was a science teacher. It was a wonderful stay and the pool was a great welcome when we arrivedDidn't have the best of sleeps as it was so hot. Our ride today spun along fast - our bikes are fantastic and fast. Rod has got neck problems so he isnt feeling the best, not a good time to have a stiff neck. We think this happened in Bordeaux when he nearly fell off his bike. His wheel got caught in a tram track, he saved himself from a total fall but could have pulled muscles in his shoulder and neck due to all the weight of the paniers on the bike. We enjoyed the shade of the canal this morning by the huge trees and trundled along at a good pace stopping to take photos. I am surprised by how few touring cyclists we are meeting along the given that it is peak holiday time in europe. Not my chosen time of year to be here really but its just how it has worked out and thats how it is. Everything is more expensive for accommodation at this time of year. When we do come across the odd ones they have so much gear sometimes towing trailers behind their bikes, we wonder where are they going or where have they come from with so much stuff. Are they touring for months. Quite alot of couples biking with their babies that are in trailer seats sleeping peacefully while their parents pull them along. Its hard enough just getting ourselves to our nightly destinations let alone dragging trailers! There are many quirky sights along the canal that we have no ideas their meaning or significance - its great as it takes your mind off the very soar bum that is developing, hard to avoid asnwe have done nearly 200km. We find our Chateaux for the night and it has a fantastic pool and collapse on the pool beds under an umbrella. We decide to eat their set menu dinner tonight as we are too knackered to go to find anything else. 3 course NZ31 and the food is great, its much cheaper to eat out in France and what you get for the money is exceptional.
