The Big tournament - 9 holes of Golf The Frogs V The Kiwi's what a great morning this was, T time 8am to avoid the crowds. Rod and I have never played golf together or even seen each other play so that seemed a bit weird to start with. Step up to the first T and whamo Great T shot so I was off yipeeee could have been embarrassing!! It was a scenic course, beautiful view of the Atlantic ocean and up towards Biarritz. The photo's tell the tale.
Kiwi's took the victory but the last hole was to see who would pay for coffee by the sea!! Yay another victory neither of us had to pay Vincent cracked under the pressure - nothing to do with us trying to put him off. Great time - then down to the beach for cafe and a swim. Home for LUNCH of course the french must do lunch - but wait we must get the BEST Basque Cake for you, a big discussion between Vincent and Melanie on where the Best is until they came upon an agreement and we were off. What a cool place it was in a old old flour mill - an experience within itself just going there, Basque Cake, biscuits, bread we head home. The Basque cake was fantastic, so what is this? Gateau Basque is constructed from layers of an almond four based cake with a filling of either pastry cream with rum or preserved cherries, we had both to sample and for me it was the yellow custard type filling with the rum flavour, Rod preferred cherry based filling - a bit sweeter I thought.
We were allowed a siesta today because a bike ride was planned for this afternoon to Biarritz to check it out. Biarritz is the Queen of Beaches, sheltered by the changeable moods of the Atlantic. What was to be what I though a leisurely short flat ride was not!! These guys are super fit and young so it was a pace that was not in my mind - we cycled out to Biarritz and what sights there was - a place for the rich and famous or those just wanting to be seen. The beaches were so crowded you could hardly see the sand. No swim for me in that zoo thanks, funny two days later the beach is announced closed due to bacteria - mmmm. So our short ride ended up being over 30km's that was up and down some hills, an early night shattered but a fantastic day full of fun and laughter.
