India and Nepal 2022
Villar de Mazarife to Astorga Today starts my fifth week of walking the Camino and I feel in good shape both physically and mentally. I hope to be arriving in Santiago in a couple of weeks time and in the meantime, am treating each day as a new adventure. Most people who walk the Camino Frances take between five to six weeks. Some pilgrims of faith prefer to walk for 33 days as this represents a day for each year that Christ was alive on earth. For me, the old cliche applies that the Camino is about the journey, not the destination and it will take as long as it takes! After walking on long straight roads for a couple of hours, we then travelled through a number of smaller villages for a drink and snack, until reaching the impressive town of Hospital del Orbigo. The bridge dates back to the 13th century and is where Knights fought in jousts to protect the town. The landscape begins to change and for the first time in over a week, small hills begin to appear and in the distance mountains which will be a feature over the next couple of days come into view. Towns and villages here have great names including Santibanez de Valdeiglesia and San Justo de la Vega. As we arrive into Astorga, the sun is setting on a long walk of 32 kms (20 miles), the longest on my Camino and I am very tired but happy with a great days walking.
