India and Nepal 2022
Molinaseca to Cacabelos It was a chilly start to the day with a cool mountain air and the need for a fleece for most of the morning. The first city to walk through is Ponferrada which has at its heart an impressive old castle and we took time out of our journey to be tourists for an hour or so. Out of the city and along the wide valley floor where there is a 'Sunday afternoon' feel to the towns with pretty much everything closed for the day. This area is surrounded by hills and mountains on all sides and has its own microclimate. The heavy rains came this afternoon before the sun broke through to provide a pleasant late afternoon walk through the vineyards producing the local bierzo wines. We also passed special funeral vaults for families of the local villages, all adorned with fresh flowers. We meet a group of young Americans - we have divided the people we meet into two camps; 'the kids' - those in the 20-30 age range and 'the kids parents' - those in the over 55 category! You need about six weeks to walk the Camino and so it not surprising these are most popular age profiles.
