India and Nepal 2022
Sarria to Portomarin Last night, I spent a very enjoyable hour or so chatting to other pilgrims around an open fire in a stone room within the albergue. The 'hospitalero' had kindly donated some local liquors which made for lots of good conversation. People are beginning to use the phrase 'home straight' but I am focused on one day at a time as there are still some hills to get over! Today has been a really pleasant walk of about 24km in landscape very similar to the Yorkshire Dales with sheep grazing, dry stone walls and little farming communities. There are a few new pilgrims joining at this point and some familiar faces from previous days on the Camino. I chatted for a while to an English Buddhist monk and bumped into a happy go lucky young Argentinian who I had not seen for a month! Very often the meeting place will be a cafe or bar which breaks up the five or six hour walking day. This afternoon, I had a leisurely walk with Margita through the country roads and forest paths, enjoying the scenery and savouring these times together.
