Day 79 - Wed 6 Jun - Wakefield
This morning we set off in search of Spooners Tunnel (now part of the Great Taste Cycle Trail). We had looked for it 2 years ago unsuccessfully. Yahoo - we went down a logging road and only had to walk 450m to find the entrance to the tunnel. Bruce walked in a wee way but it was extremely dark and also 1.4km long. We made other discoveries on our trip today - Belgrove Railway Windmill (one of only 2 left in NZ). This was used for pumping up water for the steam engines when the railway was still in use. We also spotted where Ernest Rutherford went to primary school at Foxhill. The site is now a community Memorial Hall. In Wakefield Village we found the oldest church in the South Island. After all that exploring it was lunchtime so we just had to check out the pies at the local bakery. In the afternoon we had a wander around the Heritage Park and got chatting to a bunch of guys with vintage trucks etc. The huge shed had a host of treasures hiding away in it! It was also a great afternoon to enjoy the sun.
