Day 81 - Fri 8 Jun - Stoke to Momorangi Bay
We had intended driving to Rai Valley in the Sounds and park for the night at the Rai Tavern. We set off from Nelson in the sun - I wasn't expecting to be able to see so many snow-capped mountains as we drove out of town in the sun! We struck fog on the Rai Saddle which covered the whole valley, so we just stopped for lunch at a rest area by a river. Two artists had their easels set up and were busy working. It was so cold one of them had a hottie to keep her hands warm enough to paint! Needless to say we carried on looking for a warmer spot for the night. We stopped at a lookout not far out of Havelock and spotted a pod of dolphins leaping in the water. There must have been 30+ of them! What a great sight but too far away to get a good photo…. We parked at Momorangi DOC camp right by the water's edge. Years ago we had stayed here with our tent when it was a private commercial camp. What a lovely spot with a resident weka.
