Day 42 - Mon 30 April - Manapouri to Clifden
7 weeks on our trip - the time is flying by. We are following the Southern Scenic Route now and there were a couple of interesting sights to check out. The first one was the Clifden Suspension Bridge over the Waiau River. Because of the recent rain the water was racing past. We could see why it was so dangerous and how the Mailboy had got drowned many years ago. We decided to park at the Tuatapere Golf Club not too far down the road. In the afternoon we drove out to the Big Totara Reserve to see 1000+ year old huge totaras. It was a good easy walk through mixed bush with lots of information about the trees growing in the reserve. The only people we met were two ladies off to do the walk too. After that we backtracked a bit and went off to see Lake Hauroko. This is the deepest lake in New Zealand. The lake level was up so far after the rain part of the jetty was underwater. Back at the Golf Club we had a chat to a couple of local golfers - we're the only ones parked here for the night.
