Day 40 - Sat 28 April - Cascade Creek - Milford Sound - Henry Creek
Wow - it snowed overnight! We woke to snow on the car and caravan this morning. It was odd looking at the snow on our big skylight from the inside! The hills and bush were dusted in snow too. It must have been a chilly night for those in tents here. It had rained for about 20 hours nonstop so the waterfalls were spectacular. We packed a lunch and set off by car for Milford Sound hoping for a clear day over that side of the Alps.
The road out was busy with buses, rentals and campervans. It wasn't raining at the Sound so we went to the wharf in search of the track to Lady Bowen Falls. However all we found were the big charter boats which take up to 400 passengers. Finally we talked to a chap by a couple of small boats and he was able to take us over to the jetty and track to the falls. Dennis gave us a great private tour with the history of the area etc. The Falls were pumping and we got wet from the spray so we didn't stay too long. It was a fantastic sight. The sun was out when we had our lunch by the car and after that we drove back to Cascade Creek with some photo stops along the way. We hitched up the van and drove back towards Te Anau - decided to stop at Henry Creek DOC camp for the night. Enough driving for one day!
