Atapuerca to Burgos The morning has some unexpected sights and sounds - a large number of sheep at the top of the first ridge and then open land with various monuments established by peregrinos throughout the years. The walk is enjoyable downhill and through small hamlets past trees whose leaves are turning to yellow and brown. The sprawling city of Burgos contains within its centre the fabulous cathedral and other historic sites which pilgrims have visited throughout the centuries. We make a mistake by not looking at the guidebook and just following the yellow arrows instead. The result is that rather than an optional countryside and river walk, we take the eight mile original Camino route which takes in the perimeter of a small airfield and a monotonous grind through industrial outskirts and suburbs of the city. And then finally, the city square invites us to gaze in amazement at the wonderful cathedral which I will explore tomorrow. It's the weekend and there is a lovely family atmosphere in the city with people of all ages strolling around the streets and visiting the restaurants and bars.
