Day 271, 1 April 2013, Whistler, B.C. Ah Hah! Saw a couple of signs at the ski lifts today promising a foot of new snow (as if...) and that the lifts were closing at lunch time. Is that the best you can do? Happy April Fools' Day to one and all. We were up ridiculously bright and early today. So bright in fact it was still dark. Purpose of setting an alarm you might enquire? Fresh Tracks Breakfast, Whistler Style. It's the last week for this particular event, so we figured we'd get in on it today. During Spring skiing conditions, the runs can be rock hard first thing in the morning, be pleasant for an hour or two and then sometimes be slushy by afternoon. Today was a gift. We saw in last night's forecast that freezing level was going up to 3300 metres (somewhere near the setting moon in the left of today's photo). And that meant it was worth being in the gondola queue by 7.20 am and heading up the mountain for a buffet breakfast and the chance to get onto the freshly groomed corduroy before anyone else. These events sell out fast on Powder Days (and I'm not sure anyone actually eats that much). Today however we enjoyed a leisurely nosh up and wandered out about 8.30 am. Snow was soft, sun was shining, moon was setting, tummies full. Kept ourselves out of trouble 'til about 1 or 2 pm and then headed back to the ranch for an apres-ski snooze. Utter bliss. Awake now (obviously). Must go and light the fire.
