Woke up around 730am and began a very slow pack up. Didn't feel like we could start the generator too early for coffee as the backpackers were all still asleep but by 9am we gave up and made one anyway. We were on the road by 930am and headed for another free camp site we had been told about at Narrawong Forest, just on the other side of Portland. We reached the campsite around 11am and it's awesome - a huge area with fire pits, tables, good toilets, Internet access and tv reception. There are also plenty of walks around and hopefully the odd koala in a tree! There is firewood everywhere and you are allowed to burn whatever you can find on the forest floor. We set up camp next to a fire that was still smoldering and the kids began working on it straight away. It was soon burning well and everyone spent the rest of the day gathering wood - who needs a jumping pillow and a playground!! We are allowed generators here until 10pm so we had several coffees and Nick made toasted sandwiches for lunch with the jaffle iron (thanks Poppy Jon xx). We went for a walk through the bush to Whalers Lookout - a nice view of the ocean but I came back with a kink in my neck from koala spotting - no joy. Nick drove into town and stocked up on groceries, taking the two boys with him - a huge relief, as they are both pyromaniacs and I could finally relax! I had a good chat to the neighbours about other free camp spots further up the coast and we were told of a good spot to see koalas. Nick came home and made pasta for dinner with garlic bread cooked in the fire. We also roasted some bananas in their skins in the fire with chocolate stuffed in the middle and served them with ice cream and cream - delicious! As it began to get dark the wallabies came out and the kookaburras were all around us looking for food. We spent the evening around the fire and by the time we went to bed the campsite had filled up with about 30 sets of different campers.
