Jurien Bay was a lovely place, the caravan park was about 100m from the beach, the weather was very hot but it didn't matter because the sea breeze was coming in from the beach. There was a big jetty where Jim enjoyed his fishing. The supermarkets were just out the back gate of the caravan park so it was nice and handy to be able to stock up and get some nice fresh bread. That afternoon there was a knock on our caravan door and a man of about 80 was outside, his name was Buzz he was a country singer and bush balladeer, he was putting on a show that night in the park and was doorknocking to let everyone know, we went to his concert, it was entertaining and he had some good yarns but unfortunately there were only about eight of us there so we weren't game to move until he finished because if you moved he would stop singing and ask if you were OK and then he would forget what he was talking about or forget the words of the song. He did an amazing job as it turns out he was 81, last year he skydived for his 80th birthday which was a great effort. At the end of the concert I grabbed my souviner which was a stubby holder with a photo of him on it and he signed it for me.
We drove to the pinnacles the next day, the skies were very dark with clouds and it looked like we were in for a storm but nothing eventuated, just a few sprikles of rain. The pinnacles were very unusual and yes they are sandstone mounds popping up out of the ground but you are in the middle of nowhere and THERE THEY ARE! There is a drive you can take to see all around them and it is very well done, it is a one way track marked out by little rocks which takes you right next to them, if you wish you can also park and walk through them.
We met a really nice couple (Bryn & Alison) who had given up their jobs in Karratha, bought a caravan and decided to head back to Perth. Like us the caravaning game was new to them so we were able to share some good stories and have some laughs.
The next day we drove to Cervanties which was a tiny little seaside village with one caravan park which looked lovely with shade and grass sites. There were a couple of shops in the town and also The Lobster Shack which was a lobster factory where the lobsters were prepared to go all over the world. We went on a tour and it was interesting to see the process which enabled the lobsters to remain alive for over 30hrs whilst they travelled to Japan etc, the lobsters were put in very cold water to be sorted into sizes from A to H, A being the smallest and also to make sure that the whole lobster was intact. The lobsters then travelled in the cages to the next area where they were once again put into very cold water and then packed into foam boxes of woodshavings and ice then they travelled to Perth by truck and then overseas they go. After the tour we had lobster at the restaurant there and it was very nice.
We met another couple, Carmel & Jim and their daschund Honey, who were also from Victoria, they were travelling to Geraldton to spend Xmas with family, they were travelling in a Jayco Conquest motorhome that they hired to see if it was the sort of vehicle they wanted to buy once they returned home.
Lesseur National Park was a lovely drive and we saw many wildflowers on our way. We drove to the Stockmans cave, the cave was 300m long above ground and you could walk through and come out the other side. We forgot to take our good torch with us and when we pulled up we grabbed one from the glovebox, after a bit of a walk along an empty riverbed we arrived to the mouth of the cave, walking inside it was lovely and cool, but very, very dark you could not see a thing and it was very eery, we turned on our torch and nothing changed, it was still very, very dark and our torch was useless. We didn't continue as I am sure that we would have knocked ourselves out walking into the sides of the cave, even if we had the torch I don't think that I would have liked it very much. There were lots of bees flying around the entrance of the cave and their hives were close by.
We went to Carols by candlelight out the front of the caravan park, it was ok but it probably should have been advertised as a community concert because 80% of the music certainly weren't carols, they had the local hgh school band who still needed a bit of practice and the CWA ladies who gave it a good go.
We had a lovely time at Jurien Bay and certaily will return one day.
