We arrived in Port Hedland rather early in the day and booked in at the BIG 4 . People told us that we would have trouble getting a caravan site, so we took the first place we saw, it was $52 for the night but at least we had a place to stay. Most people in the park were mine workers so they were permanant, the park was putting in a lot of units so business is obviously going well. In readiness for the upcoming wet and cyclone season all the vans were tied down with big heavy chains and ropes. I wouldn,t like to be there in the cyclone season, it would be quite scarey.
The streets were so busy with traffic, nearly all of it was utes and trucks from the mines. Like most mining towns everything was covered with red dust and looked very drab and not very inviting. It was interesting to see that the mines were so close to the town.
