We left Esperance at 7am and started to make our way towards Kalgoolie after driving for about 2 1/2 hours we stopped, had a break and refueled at Norsman before travelling about another 2hrs to Kalgoolie.
We stayed at Boulder which is about 6km from Kalgoolie. The weather was very hot while we were at Kal up to at least 40' or more. We went for a drive to Coolgardie which was a gold mining town before Kalgoolie or Boulder, now it is almost desserted, a few shops, quite a lot were closed, a small supermarket, pub, butcher and post office and a BP Roadhouse. The main street would have been as wide as a 4 or 5 lane highway, it was massive.
We did a tour of the Supapit, it is one of the biggest gold mines in the world. It was so interesting, it went for 2 1/2hrs, our driver was great as he has been working in the industry for many years. We drove down near the bottom of the pit and stopped at a couple of lookouts, we didn't see any gold but we did get very close to where the nuggets are that are to big to go through the crusher, they are very well hidden with security cameras everywhere you look. Later that afternoon they did a blast, there is a big lookout that the public can go to at any time and look at the mine. As we hopped out of the ute we heard the blast, not as loud as we expected but there was a lot of dust deep in the pit which took awhile to settle. While we were on the tour the driver told us of a pub in Boulder where one of the old mine shafts comes up through the floor near the bar. Apparently the miners would come up through the shaft have a drink or bite to eat and head back down again. There are lots of lovely old pubs in Kalgoolie and Boulder. We had a really nice time at Kalgoolie - Boulder and Jim was glad to be able to get his bike out again and go for a ride in the mornings
