This week has all been about Davey! Well, a few days anyway.
Although we both had to work on his birthday, there was at least a morning tea at work to keep me happy until I got home, where there was a birthday cake (more of a stack than a cake really) made completely from donuts! Jen had even tried to surprise me by meeting me in the foyer downstairs but as she went down one lift, I had come up the other!
In the evening we headed to the Brisbane Cricket Ground, The Gabba, to watch the twenty 20 cricket match between Queensland and New South Wales. Basically, each team only has 20 overs to bat so it's a bit of a slog fest and if any of the spectators catch the ball when it's hit into the crowd for a six, they win $1000! Unfortunately there was not much chance of us winning any money as we were sat quite high up, but the game was good anyway and the atmosphere at the ground was great.
This evening we met up with Dean and Mary as Jen had arranged for them to help us try a bit of rock climbing at Kangaroo Point cliffs, just around the corner from our place. There are dozens of routes up the side of the cliffs that have been marked out and each one has a pin that is cemented into the ground at the top that people can use to attach their ropes to. There is even a little booklet that numbers all the climbs and grades them for difficulty!
Once we had watched Dean and Mary climb up the rock, I got myself strapped in and began to tackle the ascent. After a bit of searching around for supposed holes and cracks that are meant to aid in the climb I managed to get a little further up the wall until there came a huge impasse with no apparent way around. It was here that we had to point out to Dean that we are not all six foot plus giants that can stretch and bend into impossible positions and the only option was to come back down again so someone else could try the route.
It's quite an odd feeling climbing up a wall and even weirder getting used to just leaning back knowing that someone below has the ropes tight so they will support you should you need to abseil down. It's also amazing how high it feels when you are on the rock and when you are back on the ground and someone points out where you got too it looks like it's only a few metres up! Although the rock was not exactly conquered it was still good fun and a repeat is on the cards but some shoes with grip would need to be purchased before so that it's not one step up two slips back! And there will definitely be some stretching before hand next time so that there is not a repeat of the limp home!
