After leaving Texas for the last time, we had a leisurely scenic drive through some of the local towns before starting the climb up to the top of the Bunya Mountains to find a place to stay. The campsite was little more than just a small open grassed area but there were only a few other tents and trailers there and we soon had our tent up ready for the evening. As well as the campsite that we were staying in, there are quite a few chalet style lodges to stay in, but we were contented with our tent as long as it didn't get too cold in the night!
Once we were all set up we went for a walk around the area to see what was about and to try to find out what there would be to do the next day, and it wasn't long before the night set in and we headed to bed ready to tackle one of the walks through the rainforest the next day.
We woke up early yesterday morning to find dozens of wallabies skipping around the campsite and one of the Joey's had discovered the particular joys of racing up and down the short grass bank right behind our tent. We were even treated to hot water in the showers when we finally dragged ourselves away from the entertainment around us, and after a hearty breakfast we set off along one of the nearby walking trails.
The track took us through the heart of the forest in amongst all the Bunya trees as well as along the edge of the mountainside, which gave us some great views out across the valley. It was supposed to take six to seven hours to complete, but little over four hours later we found ourselves back at the campsite wandering whether or not we had somehow managed to miss out a big chunk of the track!
We passed the afternoon away relaxing, watching the wallabies playing and enjoying the peace and serenity of the area - a sharp contrast to the last few months on the farm - before night set in again and it became too cold to stay outside any longer.
We left Bunya this morning and spent the next seven hours in the car before arriving in Rockhampton early this evening where we will be staying tonight before heading off again further up the coast tomorrow.
