We are now back in Brisbane after our short jaunt down to the Gold Coast for the weekend and we are now (unofficially) surfing gods!!
We arrived on Saturday morning and got ourselves booked into a nice little campsite in Main Beach, just five minutes from Surfer's Paradise. As this was the first time that we had been to Surfer's sober we went for a walk around the main strip in the morning before coming back to our little bit of sand for a lounge around in the afternoon.
This morning we got ourselves packed up and checked out before heading to the beach once more for our first attempt at surfing. We had ourselves booked into a group lesson with seven or eight others and before too long we were heading down the sand with our surfboards. These were not exactly aesthetically pleasing and they looked like they had been made for giants as they were about eight feet long.
We were lead to a reasonably easy area of the water (that looked exactly the same as everywhere else to us) we were shown how to catch a wave and how to stand up once we had got going. Within just a matter of minutes we were both able to stand up on our boards with consummate ease, now all we had to do was transfer this new ability to the water!!
After an hour of splashing around with varied success we were beginning to get the hang of things and by the end of the lesson we were both able to stand up while our boards cruised along the waves.
Once we had finished the lesson it was back in the car for the short journey home. Hopefully we'll get ourselves in the water again soon and it won't be long until we are up there with the Kelly Slater's of the world!!
