Today we left Bargara behind us and travelled a little way south to a lovely little beachside town in the Great Sandy National Park called Woodgate Beach where we planned to do as little as possible for the day.
The local store provided us with some fuel for our stomachs just before a bus load of pensioners arrived, which reinforced the fact that this was in fact a quiet little village that has yet to be transformed into the tourist honey pot that it could so easily become. It seems an obvious statement as it is in the Great Sandy National Park, but there are endless stretches of unspoilt beach whichever way you look and the sun was belting down hard as we looked for somewhere to stay.
Almost by chance we managed to stumble across one of the nicest apartments we have stayed in, with a balcony that (kind of) overlooked the beach. When we did manage to drag ourselves away from the air conditioning and venture into the scorching heat outside we went for a drive through the national park to see what was about. Shortly along the road we came across a kangaroo the size of a double-decker bus that seemed to wait for us to struggle to get the camera out of the bag before hopping off just at the last moment. Sly b*****!
At the end of the road we came across yet more unspoilt beach that was home to hundreds of strange little crabs who disappeared into the sand every time we stepped onto the ground. Satisfied at having done very little we headed back to the apartment for much of the same.
As the evening drew ever closer we did manage to get out for a light stroll along the beach where we are positive there was one baby turtle heading out to sea, although it swam past so quick it was not much more than a blur - but we like that idea better than any other!
Tomorrow we are heading to Rainbow Beach where we hope to see the coloured sands that give the area its name.
