The Brisbane River Festival has been ongoing since the start of the month and yesterday evening was 'Riverfire', the finale to the celebrations.
Each year there are loads of free events on and around the river including stalls, BBQ's, theatre performances, art shows and the aforementioned 'Riverfire', which is basically one big party along the river.
We took a walk down to the lagoon after dinner to find the whole place was absolutely packed, so we shuffled along until we found a break in the crowd to watch the festivities unfold. One of the local radio stations had a performance area just next to the lagoon and the music was being blasted out all along the river while we all waited for the show to begin.
Earlier in the week we had heard some jets flying above the city in preparation for last night and when the countdown begun we could hear them getting closer. They started at Surfer's Paradise and within just a matter of minutes we saw them flying towards us with their afterburners fully lit. No sooner had we seen them in the distance, they were passed us and heading away again with the sound of the engines following shortly behind.
As soon as they had passed the fireworks began from all along the river and also from the tops of some of the taller buildings along the city side of the river. The show lasted about ten minutes and included a waterfall of fireworks from below the bridge we walk across to get to work as well as many displays from the top of the Story Bridge (Brisbane's answer to the Sydney Harbour Bridge).
When it had all finished we caught up with Lynsey for a quick drink before heading back home.
