Up at 3:45 for a 4am breakfast of bacon eggs and spaghetti. A little early to be fair, but lunch will be a long time away.
Headed out to the first lot of temp cattle yards in one of the bull catchers. No headlights and the sun hadn't appeared yet, so was pretty illegal to say the least. No windscreens so we ran into a few bugs and it was amazing how the temperatures would change every time we went up or down hill on the road. First time I've been cold in Australia. We put up hessian along the fences, then waited for the chopper to bring in the cattle. We had one cow run straight through a barbed wire fence and ran across Gibb Valley Road. Will get her another day. Managed to get 16 into the yards. A couple of big cleanskin Micky bulls who had clearly avoided previous round ups. Seemed like a lot of work and expense to capture 16 beasts... we took down the hessian and have currently left them there to settle and we drove out to the next set up yards. Again put up hessian wings and are currently waiting on Ben the chopper pilot to bring the next mob in. Hoping for more cattle this time around. The waiting continues.
So after several attempts we ended up with about 60 cattle taken in numerous mobs. From there we returned to camp to pickup the truck and grab a sandwich. We then headed back down Gibb Valley Road and loaded up the roadside cattle, not without its struggles as there was some wild bulls in that mob. Roderick even apologised to me after he used the Lords name in vain, much to the amazement of the crew. We returned the cattle to camp. Will pickup the other 60 from Wild Dog tomorrow morning. There was another bush fire - this makes three since I've been here. We were quite worried that Ben may have crashed the chopper on his way home. We eventually found out it wasn't him, cause unknown at this stage. Fire is still burning but not much we can do about it currently. While it's burning towards us it's too far away to bother us.
Fantastic dinner around the camp fire tonight. Tucked up in bed by 7... hopefully I sleep well tonight.
Note to self. Never apply sunscreen above your eyes. Sweat makes it run into your eyes and it's not pleasant.
