Since the beginning of February, I have been voluneering at an after school program that kids go to in order to get extra help with their school work. So far, it has been a blast! And also quite crazy. :) I go every Tuesday for two hours. Normally, for the first hour I help one of the "ninos" with things like adding and subtracting, practicing their cursive, or even color with some of the younger ones. During the second hour me and one or two other voluneers take the young ones to the park. Afterall, they are there for 4 hours and of course can't sit still that long!
At the park we mainly try and keep them from running away and/or killing each other. Some have some anger issues and as cute as they are, they are tough little things! The worst part is they do not listen to us which leads to the moms in the park shaking their heads at us.. oops. :) But it is so fun to be around their energy and craziness! The best part is that it is helping my Spanish improve a lot and that the kids are ADORABLE. It is to the point now where they hug us when we walk in the door. My heart melts every time. :) It is tough remembering their names but we are getting pretty good at it! Jazin, Sami, Aram, Salma, Karam, Abrahim...yikes!
The only bad experience we have had is one day we went to a park with a mini pond in it. This ended with all of the kids being in the water and then a water fight and then lots of crying and throwing each others coats in the water. Good thing it wasn't too chilly! ;)
I will continue doing this until the end of May, and then we will get a certificate for completing 25+ hours of volunteering while being in Spain. What a great experience for my future career!
