This past weekend 5 of my friend and I made the infamous venture to Barcelona, Spain. Once again, it was another great trip! (even though some rookie traveler mistakes were made.....)
Thursday: I get to the Granada airport to find out that I had bought a ticket to Barcelona on the 27th of MARCH instead of the 27th of FEBRUARY! So that was fun. Luckily, there was a flight heading to Barcelona that someone chose not to take and the airline let me hop on it. :) I met up with everyone else in Barcelona then we headed to our hostal (which included the weird taxi driver getting lost on the way and me being very frustrated since he was driving like a turtle making our cost go up.) I also then left my coin purse with my driver's license and Student ID in the taxi. Off to a great start, right?!?!
Friday: We had an early breakfast and then our journey began with the first stop at Sagrada Familia, a church designed by the extremely famous architect, Gaudi. It was incredible. There was a solid 5 minutes where no one said anything as we entered the church because everyone was gazing in awe at the art work that surrounded us. The extremely detailed stain glass windows were my favorite part of the church. Next, we walked to two other buildings designed by Gaudi before grabbing some lunch at a local Paella restaurant (where Hannah, Hayley, and I also ordered a delicous bottle of wine for only 3 euro.) :) We then walked to La Rambla (a street known for its venders, shops, and restaurants) that the Boqueria (the ginormous food market) was next to. At the market we helped ourselves to some delicous chocolate and fresh fruit smoothies. Later we took the metro to Montjuic park, and Matt and I hiked to the top of it (through its beautiful gardens) to get to the Montjuic Castle and the view piont above. Afterward we made the trek back down to watch the Magic Fountain (a fountain that changes colors and the water moves to the beat of the music-it reminded me of a liquid form of fireworks and I loved every minute of it). Afterward, we headed back to our hostel for some dinner and rest. So remember how I don't have my coin purse at this point? Well, the receptionist came to my hostel room and delivered my my student ID and drivers lisence that the taxi driver had dropped off at the hostel. I guess he decided he wanted to keep my coin purse with 3 euro in it? I told you he was weird..but at least I have my identity back!! :) We then headed out for the club to enjoy the rest of our night.
Saturday: Hannah, Jenny, and I split off to do some exploring of our own. First stop: THE BEACH! (does this surprise you?) where we sat in the sand and enjoyed the ocean breeze. I even found a seashell while we were dipping our feet in the water. :) Next, we walked to La Rambla for another smoothie (haha) and then around Catalunya square, which had as many pigeons as people-yikes! It had some cool fountains and statues displayed. Next, we walked to the Picasso museum where we got free entrance with our Student IDs-woohoo! I really enjoyed the museum, despite the fact that I am not exactly an "art person.". We then hopped on the metro and headed toward Barri de Gracia, the old part of Barcelona that had older buildings. We had heard that lots of artists and musicians hung out here, but we must have gone on the wrong day because they were no where to be seen. We still found a great spot for lunch before heading to Parc Guell (another one of Gaudi's designs). We enjoyed the specatacular view of Barcelona and the sweet bench and building designs that Gaudi had designed. The benches were decorated with Mosaiic tiles that were so colorful and unique. The two main buildings reminded me of large versions of ginger bread houses which I found really entertaining. :) Lastly, we headed back downtown to have another viewing of the Magic Fountain. We also happened to come across a parade going on where everyone was dressed up and dancing in crazy costumes. What a neat experience! Finally, we went back to our hostel to eat some dinner and go to a bar before leaving for the airport at 3:30am....
Sunday: Remember how I bought the wrong ticket? Well, it was still wrong today. I had to wait until 11am for a flight to Granada, so what did I do? Spent 6 hours sleeping and eating a pastry in the airport by myself (lesson learned, right?). What a great morning it was. :) I made it back to Granada in time for lunch with my Senora before sleeping the afternoon away. :)
