My friends and I took a mini adventure today and wandered to a Monastary that is located in downtown Granada. We walked in with our hopes not being set too high and we were BLOWN AWAY! The cathedral inside the monestary was spectacular. The walls and ceilings were covered in detailed paintings and the alter had beautiful gold decoration all the way up to the ceiling. We were taking pictures non stop and then explored all of the other rooms inside the monestary. You could tell it was original by the way the colored tiles were fading away on the floor and the brick work was starting to wear down as well. However, it still looks magnificant and will last for many years to come!
For those of you who are wondering, (as we stumbled upon this question ourselves), there is a difference between an Abbey and a Monestary! It is not that the nuns live in one and Monks live in the other either, like many myths go to say. An Abbey is basically a developed Monestary with more people living inside (nuns, monks, anyone practicing faith) and also has more rooms (kitchen, common area, other buildings in addition to the monestary-yes there is a monestary inside an abbey). Every abbey starts out as a monestary and then grows to become an abbey. How confusing! But google taught me well and I now know the difference. :)
